Dohlls
A celebration of Qatar's diversity through the art of doll-making. Dohlls (Doha-Dolls) is a series of four dolls, meticulously crafted to represent the diverse and vibrant population of Qatar.
The Dohlls are crafted from wood using two distinct methods, the first method employs a manual lathe to carve intricate details by hand, while the second method utilizes 3D modeling and digital carving with a rotary CNC machine, pushing the boundaries of contemporary fabrication techniques. Each approach holds its own unique feature where the Dollhs manually crafted have the advantage of undercuts where as the digitally crafted Dohlls have the advantage of being asymmetrical.
Inspired by the rich symbolism found in the flags of Qatar's residents, the shapes of each doll are derived from basic geometric forms and national symbols, the circle, triangle, crescent and rectangle. The colors adorning each doll are meticulously selected from the hues of corresponding flags and the shapes found on them. Each Dohll is also designed to fit together representing the marriage of two countries and cultures.
The result is a collection of four unique dolls, each proudly displaying its own flag-inspired design. From the graceful curves of traditional craftsmanship to the precision of digital fabrication. Whether as a cherished keepsake or a symbol of pride, the dohlls invite you to explore the beauty and diversity of Qatar's population in a tangible and captivating way.
